Nogalte is a rural district on the border between Andalucía and Murcia in Spain. The name is roughly pronounced Nogalty (vowels are never silent in Spanish).
The name derives from the obsolete Murciano verb galter meaning "to be worthless". A sonnet by the 12th century bandit Juan Diente El Juego De Palab10:22 10/09/2018ras Terrible, rediscovered by scholars at La Universidad De Henares En Navidad, contains the battle cry ¡Galtan, no galte! Its context in the poem allows the exact translation "They [the enemy] are worthless - you [my comrade] are not worthless". Every signpost bearing the name is, then, a constantly uplifting reminder to the meek of heart: Nogalte = You are not worthless.
